Steady Shear Tests are a fundamental rheological technique used to characterize the flow behavior of materials under constant shear stress or shear rate. These tests involve applying a controlled shear rate to a sample and measuring the resulting shear stress, or conversely, applying a controlled shear stress and measuring the resultant shear rate. The primary goal is to determine the material's viscosity as a function of shear rate or shear stress.

In a typical steady shear test, a sample is placed within a rheometer, which can employ various geometries such as cone-and-plate, parallel plates, or concentric cylinders. The instrument then initiates the shearing process. For a shear rate sweep, the shear rate is incrementally increased, and the viscosity is recorded at each step. For a shear stress sweep, the shear stress is increased, and the corresponding shear rate is measured.

The data obtained from steady shear tests can reveal important material properties. Newtonian fluids exhibit a constant viscosity irrespective of the applied shear rate. Non-Newtonian fluids, on the other hand, display viscosity that changes with shear rate. Common non-Newtonian behaviors include shear thinning (viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate), shear thickening (viscosity increases with increasing shear rate), and Bingham plastic behavior (a yield stress must be overcome before flow begins).

Steady shear tests are crucial in various industries, including food science, polymer processing, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, for quality control, formulation development, and understanding material performance in applications where sustained flow is critical.
