A status update is a communication that reports the current condition, progress, or outlook of a person, task, project, or system. The term is used across business, technology, and online contexts to convey whether work is on track, stalled, or completed.

In project management and software development, status updates are formal or informal updates that summarize recent progress, upcoming milestones, blockers, and risks. They may appear in status reports, daily stand-up meetings, or updates within issue trackers and project dashboards. In online platforms, a status update refers to a post or profile element that communicates current activity, mood, or availability. Examples include social networks, messaging apps, and collaboration tools that let users share what they are doing or feeling and control audience and privacy. Status updates can be time-bound and ephemeral or persist as part of a user’s profile.
