Statusinteract

Statusinteract is an open protocol and reference implementation designed to enable real-time sharing of user presence and status information across multiple applications and platforms. It defines a common data model and messaging patterns to publish, distribute, and synchronize status updates while aiming to preserve user control and privacy.

Core concepts include presence states such as online, offline, away, do not disturb, and busy; activity indicators like typing, listening, or in a meeting; and optional attributes such as mood or location. The goal is to support interoperable presence without requiring a single vendor to dominate the ecosystem.

Architecturally, statusinteract envisions clients that emit status via a broker or bridge service. Updates can be transmitted over WebSocket or HTTP long polling, with authentication based on OAuth 2.0 or similar mechanisms. A JSON-based schema carries fields such as user_id, status, activity, mood, location, visibility, timestamp, and source_app.

Privacy and security are central: consent-driven visibility settings, per-status privacy controls, data minimization, and encryption in transit. Optional end-to-end encryption for sensitive fields may be supported in extensions. Rate limits and auditing help prevent abuse and protect user rights.

Governance is typically community-led, with an open specification, reference implementations in multiple languages, and permissive licensing. Adoption depends on participating apps and bridging implementations. The protocol emphasizes interoperability, clear versioning, and compatibility layers to minimize fragmentation.

Usage examples include syncing a user's availability across messaging, collaboration, and gaming apps; enabling presence-aware features such as status banners and availability indicators; and enabling cross-platform activity feeds.
