Startladdning

Startladdning is a Swedish term used in electronics and battery technology to describe the initial charging process of a rechargeable battery or energy storage system. It applies when a new battery is installed, after deep discharge, or after long storage, and aims to bring the cells to a stable state of charge and begin balancing voltages.

For lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, startladdning typically follows the standard constant-current/constant-voltage charging profile. The charger supplies a controlled current until the cell voltage reaches its programmed limit, after which charging continues at a fixed voltage while the current declines. In some cases manufacturers specify an initial higher-current phase within safety limits, but this is generally part of the device’s designed charging regimen.

For lead-acid batteries, startladdning may involve a controlled boost or equalization charge to reduce sulfation and balance cell voltages, especially after deep discharge or long storage. Flooded and sealed (VRLA) types have different recommendations for voltage, current, and ventilation.

Safety and quality: use a charger appropriate for the battery chemistry, avoid exceeding voltage or current ratings, monitor temperature, and ensure adequate ventilation for certain chemistries. Do not interrupt charging abruptly unless safety requires, and follow manufacturer guidelines for maximum charging time to prevent overheating or damage.

There can be regional or manufacturer-specific variations of the term, and not all batteries require a formally labeled startladdning; in many cases, the initial charging is simply the first-use charging.
