The term encompasses a wide range of designs, from small scout vessels to colossal warships, and may be crewed or autonomous.

Propulsion and energy are central challenges. Realistic discussions emphasize propulsion methods that could operate over interstellar ranges, such as high-efficiency fusion engines, antimatter propulsion, beamed power, or solar/laser sails. Many fictional depictions rely on exotic concepts like warp drives, hyperspace, or wormholes. Regardless of mechanism, starships must address extreme energy requirements, durations of isolation, and shielding from interstellar radiation and dust.

Systems and life support are critical design considerations. A starship typically includes habitats for crew and passengers, food production, water recycling, and waste management, as well as navigation, communications, and sensors capable of long-distance operation. Scout ships prioritize speed and stealth; exploration vessels emphasize sensors and science; cargo or freighters carry supplies; defense or assault ships focus on weapons and armor; capital ships are the largest. The exact technologies and aesthetics differ widely among media and speculative theories.
