Starfssvið

Starfssvið is an Icelandic term used to describe the area of responsibility or scope of duties assigned to a person within an organization. The word combines starf (work, duty) and svið (field, domain) and is commonly translated as "scope of duties" or "area of responsibility" in English.

In employment documents, starfssvið outlines the tasks, functions, and decisions the role is expected to undertake, as well as the reporting relationships and boundaries of authority. It clarifies what falls under the employee's remit and how the role interacts with other units or departments.

It is distinct from the job title (starfstitill), which names the position, and from a list of tasks (verkefni). The starfssvið may be explicit in a job description (starfslýsing) or in an employment contract, and it can evolve over time with changes in role, organizational structure, or strategic priorities.

Typical contents include main areas of responsibility, expected outcomes, key tasks, necessary competencies, and the limits of authority. It may also specify interfaces with other teams, reporting lines, and any compliance or regulatory duties associated with the role.
