Starfshlutfall is a statistical measure that indicates the share of a population that is employed within a given country or region. It is used to gauge how much of the potential workforce is actually working and to compare labor market conditions over time and between countries. While the exact definition can vary by country, it is generally understood as the proportion of the working-age population that is employed.

Calculation and scope: The employment rate is typically calculated as (number of employed people) divided by (the population of a specified working-age group), multiplied by 100. The working-age group is often defined as people aged 15 to 64 (or 15 to 74 in some datasets). Employed persons include full-time, part-time, and sometimes self-employed individuals who performed paid work or ran a business during the reference period. Some surveys also include temporary absence from work, such as holidays.

Data sources and comparability: National statistical offices, labor force surveys, and international databases (for example OECD, Eurostat) publish employment rates. Definitions and reference periods differ, which can affect international comparability.

Interpretation: A higher employment rate generally signals a larger proportion of the population working and can reflect strong economic demand, effective activation policies, or demographic changes. It should be interpreted alongside other indicators such as the unemployment rate and the labor force participation rate.

Limitations: Differences in age thresholds, inclusion criteria for employment, part-time work, and data collection methods can limit comparability.
