In most versions, it sits on the northern coast of the Archipelago of Lyria, in the imagined continent of Ardentra. The city centers on a natural harbor and a hilltop citadel, with a compact old town enclosed by light defenses.

According to lore, Stanou arose in the 12th century as a maritime trading commune formed by sailors from several regions. It developed into a mercantile republic by the early modern era and, by tradition, joined a federation of neighboring city-states while retaining considerable local autonomy.
