Standartlama

Standartlama, or standardization, is the process of establishing, approving, and applying technical standards, norms, and procedures to products, services, and processes. Its goal is to ensure safety, quality, interoperability, and compatibility, facilitating trade and consumer protection while supporting innovation and efficiency. Standardization can be voluntary or mandated by law and often involves harmonization with international standards.

In Turkey, standartlama activities are coordinated by national and international bodies, with the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE) playing a central role. TSE develops and publishes national standards and participates in international standardization work with bodies such as ISO and IEC. Governments may introduce compulsory standards or regulatory requirements for specific products or sectors, sometimes linked to conformity assessment and certification schemes.

Standards cover a wide range of areas, including product specifications, materials, performance criteria, and safety and environmental requirements. They also span organizational and management domains, such as quality management systems, information security, and environmental management. Standards can be generic or sector-specific and may reference international standards to facilitate global trade.

The standardization process typically involves proposal, committee work, public comment, and revision, followed by adoption and publication. Conformity assessment, testing, calibration, and certification are commonly used to demonstrate compliance. Benefits of standartlama include improved safety and quality, easier market access, reduced costs, and enhanced interoperability. Challenges may include keeping standards up to date with technology, balancing diverse stakeholder interests, and managing the costs of certification.
