Standardrutter

Standardrutter is a proposed open standard for routing standardized data payloads across heterogeneous distributed systems. It specifies a compact message header, routing semantics, and protocol bindings designed to promote interoperability between networks, services, and middleware.

Purpose and goals: The standard aims to reduce fragmentation in routing information, enable automated decision making by routers and gateways, and improve traceability and security through verifiable integrity and provenance data.

Technical overview: The architecture comprises a core routing layer, a header schema, and transport bindings. A Standardrutter message carries a header with fields such as version, message-id, origin, destination, route-hops, and timestamp, along with a payload that is a self-describing data container (for example JSON or CBOR). The header can include a cryptographic integrity tag. The design supports both stateless and stateful routing, policy expressions for routing decisions, and optional features such as path optimization and route aggregation.

Implementation and interoperability: Standardrutter is transport-agnostic and can work over TCP, UDP, WebSocket, or message brokers. It is intended to interoperate with existing standards through bindings, enabling use with systems that currently rely on MQTT, AMQP, or HTTP APIs. Reference implementations are discussed in several language ecosystems to illustrate how conformance could be tested.

Governance and status: as a concept, Standardrutter has appeared in academic and industry discussions but has no universally adopted standard. Proposals emphasize semantic versioning, conformance suites, and open reference implementations to facilitate cross-system compatibility. Adoption, if any, depends on the alignment of participating organizations and standardization bodies.
