St37

St37 is a designation for low-carbon, unalloyed structural steel manufactured to German standards. The prefix St stands for Stahl (steel) and 37 refers to the strength category. The most commonly used variant is St37-2, which is generally regarded as equivalent to EN 10025-2 S235JR in many markets.

Composition and properties: St37 steels have a low carbon content, typically around 0.12 to 0.20%, with modest manganese and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. They exhibit a yield strength near 235 MPa and a tensile strength roughly 360 to 510 MPa, with good ductility. Exact values depend on the specific product specification and thickness.

Processing and performance: The steel is readily hot-rolled and formed and offers good weldability, usually not requiring heat treatment to achieve structural strengths. It can be machined, formed, and welded using standard fabrication methods. As a plain carbon steel, it is susceptible to corrosion and commonly receives protective coatings when used outdoors or in corrosive environments.

Applications and standards: St37 has been widely used for general structural components such as beams, columns, plates, and welded frames in construction and machinery fabrication. DIN 17100 has evolved, and many regions now use EN 10025-2 with St37-2 aligning with S235JR and corresponding national equivalents, such as A36 in North America, depending on regional standards.
