Stålwire

Stålwire is a slender strand of steel drawn to small diameters. It is produced by cold drawing a steel rod through a series of dies to reduce its cross-section; after drawing, the wire is often annealed to restore ductility and may be tempered to adjust strength. Coatings such as galvanization or polymer finishes are common to improve corrosion resistance and handling.

Most stålwire is made from carbon steel. Low-carbon steel yields ductile wires suitable for fencing, tying, and light-duty applications, while medium- and high-carbon steels provide higher tensile strength for springs and cables. Stainless steel wires offer corrosion resistance in demanding environments. Some wires are coated or plated, and there are copper- or aluminum-coated variants for specialized electrical or weight-sensitive uses. Wires are produced in a range of diameters, from a few tens of micrometers for fine wires to several millimeters for heavier uses.

Applications include direct use as individual wires for fencing and binding, components of wire rope and cables for lifting, hoisting, towing, and mooring, and in springs, nets, fencing, and reinforcement. They are widely used in construction, automotive, and industrial equipment. Stainless variants are common where corrosion resistance is essential.

Standards and testing are set by international and national bodies, such as ISO, EN, ASTM, and JIS, covering chemical composition, mechanical properties, tolerances, coatings, and performance. The properties of stålwire depend on carbon content, heat treatment, and coating, which influence ductility, tensile strength, and fatigue behavior.
