Spätwinter

Spätwinter, literally “late winter” in German, is a term used to describe the transition period between winter and early spring. It denotes a time when winter weather lingers but spring-like conditions begin to appear, typically in the latter half of February through March, and sometimes into April depending on the region and climate.

In practical terms, Spätwinter is characterized by fluctuating temperatures around freezing, thaw and freeze cycles, and a mix of precipitation forms such as rain, sleet, and snow. Snow cover may recede in lower-lying areas while higher elevations retain snow. Weather can be unsettled, with periods of milder, sunnier days followed by cold snaps.

Ecologically, late winter involves changing biological activity. Buds swell on trees, sap begins to rise, and some early flowers may emerge. Animals resume visible activity at a slower pace than in early spring, while the risk of late frosts remains a concern for agriculture and horticulture. Ground conditions improve as soils thaw, creating favorable conditions for pruning and planning, but unpredictable temperatures can threaten vulnerable crops and seedlings.

Culturally and meteorologically, Spätwinter is a descriptive rather than a precisely defined season. It is more widely used in German-speaking regions and varies with local climate and yearly weather patterns. In the context of climate change, the timing and duration of late winter may shift, leading to changes in ecological cues and human activities tied to this transitional period.
