Spänetypen, which translates to "chip types" in English, refers to the various forms that material takes when it is removed by a cutting tool during machining operations. The shape and size of the chip are direct indicators of the cutting process parameters, such as cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, tool geometry, and the material being machined. Understanding different chip types is crucial for process optimization, tool wear monitoring, and ensuring surface finish quality.

Commonly observed chip types include continuous chips, discontinuous chips, segmented chips, and built-up edge (BUE) chips. Continuous chips are typically formed when machining ductile materials at high cutting speeds and low feed rates. They are long and stringy, and can be problematic as they may wrap around the workpiece or tool, leading to poor surface finish and safety hazards. Discontinuous chips are produced when machining brittle materials or under conditions that cause fracture in the chip. They appear as small, separate pieces. Segmented chips exhibit a saw-tooth appearance, with variations in hardness along the chip's length, often seen when machining materials with a wide range of ductility or at intermediate cutting speeds. Built-up edge chips occur when small particles of the workpiece material adhere to the cutting edge of the tool, forming a temporary layer that effectively changes the tool's geometry. This BUE can break off intermittently, affecting surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

The analysis of chip types provides valuable feedback to machinists, allowing them to adjust parameters to achieve desired outcomes and prevent potential issues in manufacturing.
