Spuquen

Spuquen is a town and municipality in the northern part of the fictional nation of Valoria, in the Nordmark region. It lies at the confluence of the Spuquen River and the Lerta valley, about 60 kilometers north of Valoria’s capital. The population is around 12,000 residents.

The name Spuquen derives from an old Nordalian language meaning "meeting place of waters." The river predates the town and gave its current name to the settlement.

Spuquen began as a market settlement in the 13th century, developing as a hub for timber and grain. It received town rights in the 14th century and endured raids during the 16th century, after which it was rebuilt. Rail and road links expanded in the 19th century, reinforcing its integration into Valoria.

Geographically, the town sits in a temperate river valley with mixed forests and gentle hills to the east. Winters are cool and summers mild. The surrounding countryside includes small nature reserves protecting migratory birds.

Economically, Spuquen has shifted from agriculture and crafts toward services, logistics, and small manufacturing. The riverfront and historic core attract visitors, while local markets support producers from nearby farms.

Key landmarks include the 14th-century parish church of St. Mira and a well-preserved town square. An autumn harvest festival and a weekly market are traditional highlights.

Transport connections consist of a regional railway linking to the capital and coastal towns, complemented by national roads and a local bus network.
