Spredsheetid

Spredsheetid is a term used to refer to the unique identifier assigned to a spreadsheet document within a software ecosystem. It is used by APIs, URLs, and programmatic access to locate and operate on a specific file. In many contexts, the standard spelling is spreadsheet ID, and the identifier serves as a persistent reference to a single spreadsheet.

In Google Sheets, the spreadsheetId is the file's identifier in Google Drive. The Google Sheets API uses it in endpoints such as GET https://sheets.googleapis.com/v4/spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}. It also appears in the file’s URL, for example in the segment /d/{spreadsheetId}/edit. The ID remains stable for the life of the file unless the file is altered in ways that change its identity or the file is moved to a different owner or account.

Other platforms use analogous concepts with different names. In Microsoft Graph for Excel workbooks, a workbook ID or item ID serves a comparable purpose for accessing a specific workbook. The general concept is a platform-specific, persistent identifier that uniquely references a spreadsheet or workbook, enabling programmatic read and write operations.

Handling and security: the ID often forms part of a request URL, and access depends on permissions granted to the requesting application or user. Treat IDs as sensitive in environments with restricted data, and avoid exposing them beyond the necessary scope. When sharing, rely on the platform’s access controls rather than exposing IDs alone.
