Sprachkanal

Sprachkanal is a term used in German to denote the channel through which spoken language signals are transmitted. It can refer to both technical communication pathways and conceptual notions in linguistics, depending on the context.

In telecommunications, a Sprachkanal is the voice channel that carries speech signals from a transmitter to a receiver. In traditional analog telephone networks, this channel typically occupies a bandwidth of about 3.4 kHz, covering the core frequency range used for intelligible speech. In digital systems, voice is encoded with codecs (such as G.711 or G.729) and transmitted over packets; the term Sprachkanal is often used to describe the logical channel carrying the speech data, even though the underlying transport may be packet-based rather than a dedicated circuit.
