Spiegelreflectie is a fundamental optical phenomenon where light rays bounce off a smooth surface, such as a mirror, in a predictable manner. When light encounters a reflective surface, it adheres to the law of reflection, which states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. The angle of incidence is measured between the incoming light ray and the normal (a line perpendicular to the surface), and the angle of reflection is measured between the reflected light ray and the same normal. This precise relationship ensures that the reflected image appears in a consistent and predictable location.

The surface of a perfect mirror is extremely smooth at a microscopic level. This smoothness is crucial because it allows parallel incoming light rays to reflect off the surface in parallel outgoing rays. This orderly reflection is what creates a clear and undistorted image. In contrast, if a surface is rough, light rays will scatter in many different directions, a process known as diffuse reflection, resulting in no discernible image.
