Spiegelindizes

Spiegelindizes (plural of Spiegelindex) is a term used in statistics and related disciplines to describe a family of indicators designed to mirror or reflect the behavior of another variable or set of variables. A spiegelindex is typically constructed by transforming a reference series so that its movements align with a chosen reference direction, scale, or baseline. This mirroring can take several forms, including normalization to a base period, standardization, taking reciprocals or inverted values, or mapping to a common scale so that the index and the original variable share a similar trajectory.

The main purpose of spiegelindizes is to improve comparability across heterogeneous series, to provide a cross-check on trends, and to highlight divergences between indicators. They are used as descriptive tools in economics, finance, demography, ecology, and social science, where analysts compare indicators that differ in units, volatility, or timing. Variants include simple mirroring around a base value, upside-down versions to emphasize declines, and relative versions that express the current level as a proportion of the baseline or a leading indicator.
