SphK1eens refers to a family of enzymes known as sphingosine kinases. These enzymes play a crucial role in cellular metabolism, specifically in the biosynthesis of sphingolipids. Sphingosine kinases catalyze the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). This reaction is a key regulatory step in the sphingolipid metabolic pathway, which influences a wide range of cellular processes.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate is a bioactive lipid mediator that acts both intracellularly and extracellularly. Inside the cell, S1P can regulate cell growth, survival, and differentiation.
