Spermiogramme

A spermiogramme, also known as a semen analysis, is a laboratory test that measures the quantity and quality of a man's sperm. It is a crucial part of a fertility evaluation for couples experiencing difficulty conceiving. The test involves collecting a semen sample, usually through masturbation, and examining it under a microscope.

Several parameters are assessed in a spermiogramme. Volume refers to the amount of semen ejaculated. Sperm concentration, or count, indicates the number of sperm per milliliter of semen. Motility is the ability of sperm to move effectively, which is essential for them to reach and fertilize an egg. Morphology assesses the shape and structure of the sperm, looking for normal forms. The presence of white blood cells can also be noted, which may indicate an infection.

The results of a spermiogramme help identify potential male infertility factors. Abnormal findings can suggest issues with sperm production, blockage in the reproductive tract, or other underlying health conditions. Doctors use these results to guide further investigations and recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or assisted reproductive technologies. It is important to note that a single abnormal spermiogramme does not definitively confirm infertility, and repeat testing may be necessary.
