Spekularny

Spekularny is a Polish adjective used primarily in scientific contexts to describe phenomena related to specular reflection, i.e., mirror-like reflection of light from smooth, polished surfaces that preserves a clear, directed image.

The term is derived from Latin specularis, associated with a mirror, and has entered Polish scientific vocabulary through classical languages and related technical usages. In contemporary Polish, spekularny is mainly found in optics, materials science and related fields, where it contrasts with diffuse (dyfuzyjne) reflection, which occurs on rough surfaces and scatters light in many directions.

In optics and computer graphics, odbicie spekularne occurs when light rays strike a smooth surface at a given angle and reflect with equal angle on the opposite side of the surface normal. This produces sharp highlights and a recognizable reflection of objects in the surface. By contrast, surfaces that are not smooth cause diffuse reflection, spreading light in multiple directions and yielding a matte appearance without a clear image.

The term should not be confused with spektralny, which relates to the spectrum of light or wavelengths, nor with spekulacyjny or related words in other domains. In practical use, spekularny is most common when describing reflective properties of materials (such as polished metal or glass) and in computer graphics when modeling specular highlights and reflections.
