Spektraalianalyysiä

Spektraalianalyysiä is the Finnish term for spectral analysis. It is a scientific method used to investigate the properties of a substance by measuring how it interacts with electromagnetic radiation. This interaction can involve absorption, emission, or scattering of light at specific wavelengths. Different elements and molecules have unique spectral "fingerprints," meaning they absorb or emit light at characteristic wavelengths, allowing for their identification and quantification.

The principle behind spectral analysis is based on the fact that electrons within atoms and molecules can absorb energy and jump to higher energy levels. When these electrons return to lower energy levels, they emit energy in the form of photons, which have specific wavelengths corresponding to the energy difference between the levels. By analyzing the spectrum of light emitted or absorbed by a sample, scientists can determine its elemental composition, molecular structure, and even its physical state.

Various spectroscopic techniques exist, each suited for different types of analysis and samples. Common methods include atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS). These techniques find wide applications in diverse fields such as chemistry, physics, astronomy, environmental monitoring, medicine, and materials science. For instance, astronomers use spectral analysis to determine the composition of stars and galaxies, while chemists use it to identify unknown compounds or monitor chemical reactions. In environmental science, it helps detect pollutants in air and water.
