It encompasses the concept of discrimination across disciplines, including biology, information science, and signal processing, by emphasizing uniqueness of identification rather than mere presence.

The term is a neologism, not standardized in any single field. It is sometimes introduced to discuss the balance between generality and specificity in models and measurements, highlighting how a feature or signal can be informative in one setting but less so in another.
