Spearwort

Spearwort is a common name that can refer to several different plants, most notably those belonging to the genus Ranunculus, specifically species like *Ranunculus flammula* and *Ranunculus lingua*. These plants are typically found in wet, marshy areas, along the edges of ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams, and in damp meadows. They are herbaceous perennials, meaning they live for more than two years and die back to the ground in winter.

The name "spearwort" is derived from the shape of the leaves, which are often lanceolate or ovate, resembling a small spearhead. The flowers are usually bright yellow, with five petals, characteristic of the buttercup family. The stems can be erect or decumbent, and the plants can grow to varying heights depending on the species and environmental conditions.

Historically, some species of spearwort have been used in folk medicine, though they are generally considered poisonous if ingested due to the presence of acrid compounds, similar to other buttercups. When handled, the sap can cause skin irritation or blistering in some individuals. Due to their toxicity, spearworts are not typically cultivated for ornamental purposes, and their presence is more indicative of the wetland habitat they prefer.
