Decumbent is an adjective used in botany and medicine to describe a tendency to lie down or to rest on the ground. The term originates from the Latin decumbere, meaning to lie down.

In botanical usage, a decumbent stem grows along the soil surface and then turns upward at its tip. This contrasts with procumbent stems, which lie flat without an upward tendency, and with erect stems, which grow vertically. Decumbent growth is common in many herbaceous plants and in some creeping or sprawling species.

In clinical medicine, decumbent refers to a patient’s position while lying down. Phrases such as dorsal decubitus (lying on the back) and lateral decubitus (lying on the side) describe specific orientations. The term is used in contrast to upright or seated positions. Prolonged decubitus can lead to pressure injuries, or decubitus ulcers, particularly in immobile patients, prompting routine repositioning and preventive care.
