Spatulas

Spatula is a hand tool with a flat blade attached to a handle, used for scraping, lifting, flipping, and mixing. In cooking, spatulas come in multiple forms and materials. A common distinction is between flexible spatulas, made from silicone or rubber, used to scrape bowls and fold ingredients; and turners, with a rigid blade, designed to lift and flip foods on a griddle or pan. Flexible silicone spatulas tolerate high heat and resist staining, while metal spatulas provide rigidity for turning larger items. Nylon spatulas offer a middle ground but may discolor with heat. Wooden spatulas are durable and gentle on cookware but can trap moisture if not dried properly.

In laboratory contexts, a spatula is a small flat instrument for transferring solids or mixing powders. Lab spatulas are typically stainless steel or plastic and may be straight or angled.

Common design features include blade width and thickness, edge shape (straight or beveled), blade curvature, and handle length. Some models have offset handles or slotted blades to reduce drag and lift. Cleaning varies by material; silicone and many plastics are dishwasher-safe, while wooden spatulas are usually hand-washed and dried to prevent cracking. Metal spatulas may require care to avoid scratching nonstick surfaces.

Etymology traces to Latin spatula, meaning a small shovel or trowel. The term is used broadly in cooking and science to describe flat, hand-held tools with a blade and handle.
