Spannungsarmung

Spannungsarmung, often translated as stress relieving or stress reduction, is a thermal treatment process applied to metallic components to reduce internal stresses. These internal stresses can arise from various manufacturing processes such as welding, casting, forging, machining, or cold working. If left unaddressed, these residual stresses can lead to dimensional instability, reduced mechanical properties like fatigue strength, and even premature failure of the component.

The Spannungsarmung process typically involves heating the component to a specific temperature below its lower critical temperature, holding it at that temperature for a defined period, and then cooling it slowly. The elevated temperature allows the material's atoms to move and rearrange themselves, thereby relaxing the internal stresses. The holding time is crucial to ensure that the stress relaxation is sufficient throughout the entire cross-section of the part. Slow cooling is essential to prevent the reintroduction of new residual stresses during the cooling phase.

The exact temperature and holding time depend on the material being treated, the nature and magnitude of the residual stresses, and the desired level of stress reduction. For some materials, a full annealing process might be employed, while for others, a specific stress-relieving anneal at a lower temperature is sufficient. This process is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and heavy machinery manufacturing to ensure the integrity and longevity of critical components.
