The Spaltenmethode, often translated as the "column method" or "splitting method," is a pedagogical approach used in mathematics education, particularly for teaching arithmetic operations like multiplication and division to younger students. It breaks down complex calculations into smaller, more manageable steps, aligning with the principle of scaffolding learning.

In multiplication, the Spaltenmethode involves decomposing one or both numbers into their place values (units, tens, hundreds, etc.). For example, when multiplying 23 by 4, one might first multiply 20 by 4 and then 3 by 4, and finally add the results (80 + 12 = 92). This visual and step-by-step process helps students understand the distributive property of multiplication.

For division, the method typically involves a similar breakdown. A larger number is divided by a smaller number by systematically removing multiples of the divisor, often focusing on tens and units. This approach aids in conceptualizing the division process and reducing the cognitive load associated with larger numbers.
