The main branches of Sozialversicherung generally include statutory health insurance (Krankenversicherung), providing coverage for medical treatment and sick pay; statutory pension insurance (Rentenversicherung), which offers income replacement in old age, disability, or upon the death of a breadwinner; unemployment insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung), designed to provide financial support and assistance in finding new employment during periods of joblessness; and statutory accident insurance (Unfallversicherung), covering injuries and occupational diseases sustained at work or during commuting. Long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) is also often included, providing support for individuals requiring assistance with daily living activities.

These systems are typically financed through contributions shared between employers and employees, with the state often playing a regulatory role.
