Think of them as a messenger service that takes requests from one application, delivers them to another, and then brings the response back. APIs define the methods and data formats that applications can use to request and exchange information. This enables developers to build new applications by leveraging the functionalities of existing ones without needing to understand their internal workings.

Common examples of APIs include web APIs, which are used for communication over the internet, such as those used by social media platforms to allow other applications to post updates or retrieve user data. Operating system APIs provide a way for applications to interact with the underlying operating system's features, like file management or network access. Libraries also often expose APIs, allowing developers to use pre-written code for specific tasks. The use of APIs promotes modularity, reusability, and faster development cycles in software engineering.
