Soundsymbols, or sound symbolism, refers to the non-arbitrary association between speech sounds and meaning, sensory qualities, or perceptual properties. It covers instances where phonetic patterns evoke attributes such as size, texture, or sound, beyond conventional dictionary definitions. The term includes onomatopoeia — words that imitate natural sounds — as well as ideophones and certain phono-semantic elements that convey vivid expressive content. In many languages, sound-symbolic words form a productive part of the lexicon, sometimes with rich inventories of expressive forms.

In linguistic theory, sound symbolism contrasts with a standard view of arbitrariness in language, though the degree and form of iconicity vary across languages. Cross-linguistic studies report correlations between phonetic features and semantic domains, such as auditory impressions or motion. Classic examples include English words like buzz, boom, and hiss that imitate sounds, and in Japanese, ideophones called giongo and giseigo that encode manner, degree, or texture. The Bouba–Kiki effect, a cross-cultural finding, suggests that listeners associate certain consonant-vowel patterns with round or sharp shapes, indicating cross-modal sound symbolism.

Applications appear in advertising, poetry, and child language development, where iconic cues can facilitate recall and vivid expression. Some researchers have proposed that phonesthemes — recurring sound-meaning pairings within a language — reflect systematic, though debated, aspects of sound symbolism within the lexicon.
