Sotsu

Sotsu is a Japanese term associated with graduation, derived from the kanji 卒. In ordinary use, the concept appears in compounds rather than as a standalone word. The most common forms are sotsugyō (卒業), meaning graduation; sotsugyōshiki (卒業式), the graduation ceremony; and sotsugyōsei (卒業生), graduates. The readings are primarily on’yomi, and the kanji is used in a range of contexts related to completing a course of study.

The school year typically ends in March, and many schools hold formal ceremonies attended by classmates, families, and teachers.
