Soppeng

Soppeng is a regency (kabupaten) in the province of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The administrative center is the town of Watansoppeng. Located in the eastern part of the province, Soppeng encompasses a predominantly rural landscape that includes lowland rice fields, plantations, and inland hills. The climate is tropical, with distinct wet and dry seasons.

The regency was established during Indonesia’s mid-20th century regional governance era and is subdivided into several districts (kecamatan) and villages (desa and kelurahan). The population is diverse, with Bugis and Makassarese communities forming major linguistic and cultural groups. Indonesian is the official language, while local Bugis and Makassar dialects are commonly spoken. The majority religion is Islam.

Economically, Soppeng relies largely on agriculture. Principal crops include rice, maize, coconuts, cacao, and coffee, complemented by livestock farming and small-scale trade. The local economy also benefits from government services and small industries centered in urban and rural centers.

Transportation and connectivity are supported by provincial roads linking Soppeng to other parts of South Sulawesi, including Makassar, the provincial capital.
