These tests simulate corrosive environments by exposing specimens to a saline mist in controlled chambers, typically using sodium chloride solutions. The most common standards include ASTM B117, ISO 9227, and ASTM G85, each with specific parameters regarding salt concentration, chamber temperature, and test duration.

During testing, specimens are placed in the chamber where the salt solution is atomized to create a fine fog that settles on the surfaces. The chamber maintains consistent environmental conditions throughout the exposure period, which can range from 24 hours to several thousand hours depending on the material and standard requirements. After testing, specimens undergo visual inspection and may be evaluated for corrosion formation, blistering, adhesion loss, or other deterioration.

Salt spray testing is widely utilized in industries such as automotive, aerospace, marine, and coatings manufacturing to assess product durability and quality control. While these tests provide valuable comparative data, they have limitations in replicating all real-world corrosion conditions. Results should therefore be interpreted with consideration for the specific application environment and supplemented with additional testing methods when necessary.
