Soojusmahtude

Soojusmahtude, also known as heat capacity, is a fundamental physical property that describes the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by a given amount. It is typically measured in joules per Kelvin (J/K) or joules per degree Celsius (J/°C). A substance with a high soojusmahtude can absorb a large amount of heat without a significant increase in its temperature, making it useful for applications where temperature stability is important. Conversely, a substance with a low soojusmahtude will experience a rapid temperature change when heat is added or removed.

The soojusmahtude of a substance is an extensive property, meaning it depends on the amount of the substance. For instance, a larger volume of water will have a higher soojusmahtude than a smaller volume of water. To compare the heat capacity of different substances independent of their mass, a related intensive property called specific heat capacity is often used. Specific heat capacity, measured in joules per kilogram per Kelvin (J/kg·K) or joules per gram per degree Celsius (J/g·°C), represents the heat energy needed to raise the temperature of one unit of mass of a substance by one degree. Water, for example, has a relatively high specific heat capacity, which is why it is used in cooling systems and plays a significant role in regulating Earth's climate.
