Sondierarbeiten, also known as sounding or probing, refers to a broad category of investigative techniques used to determine subsurface conditions without extensive excavation. These methods are employed across various fields, including geotechnical engineering, archaeology, and geology, to gather information about the composition, structure, and properties of materials beneath the surface.

In geotechnical engineering, sondierarbeiten are crucial for assessing soil and rock formations for construction projects. Techniques like borehole drilling, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), and Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) involve inserting probes or samplers into the ground to measure resistance, extract samples, and identify different soil layers. This data helps engineers understand load-bearing capacity, stability, and potential risks like groundwater presence.

Archaeological sondierarbeiten, often called test pitting or geophysical surveys, aim to locate and evaluate buried cultural heritage.
