Solvuvuuden

Solvuvuuden is a hypothetical concept used in discussions of problem solvability and decision problems. It denotes the practical solvability of a task given current algorithms, data, and resources, capturing not only whether a solution exists but also whether it can be found, verified, and deployed within acceptable time and cost constraints. The term takes its cue from the stem solv- (to solve) and the Finnish-like suffix -vuuden, signaling a quality or state.

In contrast to mathematical solvability, solvuvuuden emphasizes feasibility under real-world constraints, including data availability, computational limits, and the reliability of methods. It is intended as a domain-agnostic framework that can be adapted to fields such as operations research, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and risk assessment.

A solvuvuuden assessment typically considers several dimensions: computational complexity or time/space requirements; data sufficiency and quality; availability and maturity of methods or algorithms; and uncertainty or variability in inputs. A scoring scheme on a 0 to 1 scale is commonly proposed, with 0 representing impracticality and 1 representing straightforward solvability; weights reflect domain priorities. Estimation combines theoretical analysis with empirical testing and expert judgment.

Applications include comparing alternative approaches to a problem, guiding research agendas, and informing project feasibility.

Critics point to subjectivity in weighting, dependence on modeling choices, and the risk of conflating solvability with performance or novelty.
