Solventverbinding

Solventverbinding, often rendered as solvent binding or solvation, is the interaction of solvent molecules with dissolved species. This process stabilizes ions and molecules through a network of non-covalent interactions, enabling dissolution and influencing reactivity. The primary roles of solvent binding are to shield charges, reduce electrostatic energy, and organize the solute in favorable conformations.

The interactions responsible include hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole forces, and van der Waals interactions. In solution chemistry, the first solvation shell around a solute can decisively affect reaction pathways and equilibria. In coordination chemistry, solvents such as water, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, or tetrahydrofuran can act as ligands, binding to metal centers and altering coordination numbers and geometry. Solvent adducts may be displaced by stronger ligands, affecting catalytic activity and selectivity.

Computationally, solvation is modeled either explicitly, by including individual solvent molecules around the solute, or implicitly, by treating the bulk solvent as a dielectric continuum. Solvent binding also shapes the properties of materials. In crystal chemistry, solvent molecules may be incorporated into lattices as solvates or occupy interstitial sites, influencing stability and phase behavior. In biochemistry, hydration shells around macromolecules govern structure and dynamics.
