In industrial applications, solvent-based systems are common in paints, coatings, adhesives, and cleaning agents. For example, many traditional paints use organic solvents like toluene or xylene to dissolve pigments and binders, enabling even application and quick drying. Similarly, dry-cleaning solvents like perchloroethylene dissolve grease and stains from fabrics without water. However, solvent-based products often raise environmental and health concerns due to their volatility and potential toxicity.

The term can also describe processes, such as solvent extraction, where a solvent selectively dissolves a target compound from a mixture, separating it from impurities. This method is used in pharmaceuticals, food processing, and chemical production. Alternatively, solvent-based cleaning involves using liquids like acetone or alcohol to remove contaminants from surfaces, offering efficiency but sometimes requiring ventilation to mitigate fumes.
