Solvations

Solvations is a term used primarily in educational psychology and problem-solving research to describe the collective steps, methods, and justificatory reasoning that lead from a stated problem to a final answer. The plural form can refer to multiple problem-solving attempts, distinct solution approaches to a problem, or the set of strategies employed across a classroom or study. In this sense, solvations emphasize process as well as product, enabling analysis of reasoning, strategy selection, and verification of results.

Typical components of solvations include problem representation, the selection of an approach, a sequence of transformations or calculations, justification of each step, verification of the result, and reflection on limitations or alternative methods. Researchers may categorize solvations by strategy type (such as algebraic manipulation, logical deduction, or heuristic search) and by quality criteria such as correctness, efficiency, and transparency.

The term is largely used in didactic contexts and is uncommon in formal mathematics or chemistry, where "solutions" and "solvation" are standard terms. As a concept, solvations provide a framework for evaluating and teaching how problems are solved rather than merely recording the final answer.
