Soluviestinnästä, known in English as cell signaling, is the process by which cells communicate with each other. This communication is essential for a wide range of biological functions, including growth, development, metabolism, and immune responses. Cells use a variety of mechanisms to send and receive signals, often involving molecules that bind to specific receptors on the surface or inside other cells.

There are generally three types of cell signaling: paracrine, endocrine, and autocrine. Paracrine signaling involves cells releasing signals that act on nearby cells. Endocrine signaling occurs when cells release hormones into the bloodstream, which then travel to target cells throughout the body. Autocrine signaling is when a cell signals itself, releasing molecules that bind to receptors on its own surface.

The signals themselves can be chemical in nature, such as hormones, neurotransmitters, or growth factors, or they can be physical, like direct cell-to-cell contact. Once a signal molecule binds to its receptor, it triggers a cascade of events within the receiving cell, known as a signal transduction pathway. These pathways often involve a series of protein interactions that ultimately lead to a specific cellular response, such as a change in gene expression, protein activity, or cell movement. Understanding cell signaling is crucial for comprehending many physiological and pathological processes in living organisms.
