Solusyönnissä

Solusyönnissä is a Finnish term that translates to "in hibernation" or "in winter sleep." It refers to a state of dormancy adopted by many animals during the colder months to conserve energy and survive periods of scarcity. This physiological state is characterized by a significant drop in metabolic rate, body temperature, and heart rate.

Animals that undergo solusyönnissä, commonly referred to as hibernators, typically prepare for this period by accumulating fat reserves and finding a safe, sheltered location such as a den or burrow. The duration and depth of hibernation can vary depending on the species and environmental conditions. Some animals, like bears, enter a lighter form of torpor, often referred to as winter sleep, where they can be roused more easily. Others, such as ground squirrels and bats, experience much deeper hibernation with profound physiological changes.

The trigger for entering solusyönnissä is usually a combination of decreasing temperatures and a reduction in food availability.
