Solukontakti is the Finnish term for intercellular contact, referring to the physical and functional interactions between neighboring cells in multicellular organisms. It encompasses mechanisms that support tissue cohesion, communication, and coordinated behavior, including both direct cell-to-cell contact and signaling that occurs at contact points.

Mechanisms and structures involved include cell adhesion molecules and specialized junctions. In animals, cadherins and integrins mediate selective binding between cells and with the extracellular matrix. Junctional complexes such as tight junctions, adherens junctions, and desmosomes help establish barriers, maintain tissue architecture, and coordinate signaling. Gap junctions, formed by connexins, allow direct transfer of ions and small metabolites between adjacent cells. In plants, plasmodesmata provide cytoplasmic connections that enable intercellular transport and communication.

Roles and significance. Solukontakti is essential for embryonic development, tissue homeostasis, and wound healing, enabling cells to align, migrate, and respond to cues collectively. It also underpins immune recognition, with specialized contact areas such as the immunological synapse between T cells and antigen-presenting cells guiding activation and response.
