Solmuvärjäys, also known as tie-dye in English, is a resist dyeing technique. The process involves binding sections of fabric with string or rubber bands before dyeing it. These bound areas prevent the dye from reaching the fabric, creating patterns when the bindings are removed. The tightness and placement of the knots or folds significantly influence the final design.

Historically, variations of resist dyeing have been practiced for centuries across various cultures. True tie-dye as it's commonly known today gained significant popularity in the Western world during the 1960s and 1970s, becoming associated with counterculture movements and vibrant, psychedelic aesthetics.
