The SoleWasserWärmepumpe, commonly referred to as a ground-source heat pump or geothermal heat pump, is a renewable energy system designed to efficiently transfer heat from the ground to a building’s heating and hot water systems. This technology leverages the relatively stable temperature of the earth, typically between 8–15°C (46–59°F) at depths of a few meters, to provide consistent heating even in cold climates.

The system operates by circulating a fluid, often a water-antifreeze mixture, through buried pipes (known as a ground loop) installed horizontally or vertically in the ground. The fluid absorbs heat from the earth and carries it to the heat pump unit, where a compressor raises the temperature to a usable level for heating or domestic hot water. The cooled fluid is then pumped back into the ground loop to repeat the process.
