SolarCity also focused on expanding solar energy adoption through various channels, including direct sales and partnerships with home builders and community organizations. The company was known for its door-to-door sales force and its efforts to streamline the installation process. Over time, SolarCity expanded its services to include solar energy storage solutions and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

In 2016, SolarCity was acquired by Tesla, Inc., a company founded by their cousin, Elon Musk. The acquisition aimed to integrate SolarCity's solar business with Tesla's electric vehicle and energy storage operations, creating a more comprehensive clean energy ecosystem. Following the acquisition, the company was rebranded as Tesla Energy.
