Softlight

Softlight is a type of lighting characterized by its diffused and gentle quality. Unlike hard light, which creates sharp, well-defined shadows, softlight produces a more gradual transition from illuminated areas to shadowed areas. This effect is achieved by spreading the light over a larger surface area or by scattering it through a diffuser.

Common sources of softlight include overcast skies, large window light on a cloudy day, or artificial lights equipped with softboxes, umbrellas, or diffusion gels. The diffusion process scatters the light rays, reducing their intensity and directionality, which in turn minimizes harsh shadows and specular highlights.

In photography and cinematography, softlight is often favored for portraiture because it is flattering to the subject, reducing the appearance of skin imperfections and creating a pleasing, ethereal mood. It can also be used to illuminate entire scenes evenly, providing a subtle and atmospheric illumination. The perceived size of the light source relative to the subject is a key factor in determining the softness of the light. A larger apparent source creates softer shadows.
