Snøre

Snøre is a Norwegian term for a flexible line, cord, or string used to tie, fasten, suspend, or transmit force. It encompasses a wide range of sizes and strengths and is commonly differentiated from thicker rope by its smaller diameter and use in everyday tasks, crafts, and light-duty applications.

Snøre is made from natural fibers such as hemp, cotton, jute, or flax, and from synthetics such as nylon, polyester, polypropylene, or aramid fibers. It can be produced as twisted three-strand cord, braided cord, or plaited cord, and may be solid or hollow to accommodate drawcords or cores. Material choice determines strength, stiffness, elasticity, abrasion resistance, and moisture sensitivity.

Typical applications include securing packages, tying and bundling goods, camping and outdoor gear, garment or bag fastenings, and crafts. In fishing, fiskesnøre is the common term for fishing line, a specialized form with specific breaking strength and knot-compatibility. For heavier work, other rope types are preferred.

Care and safety: inspect for fraying or cuts before use; avoid prolonged exposure to sun and chemicals; store dry and away from heat; use appropriate knots such as bowline or square knot for security. Choose a snøre with an adequate breaking strain and minimal stretch for the task.
