Snellijmen

Snellijmen, also known as cyanoacrylates, are a group of strong, fast-acting adhesives. They are commonly referred to as "super glue" due to their rapid bonding capabilities. The primary component of snellijmen is a cyanoacrylate ester, which polymerizes rapidly when exposed to moisture, forming a strong bond between surfaces.

The curing process of snellijmen is an anionic polymerization reaction initiated by weak bases, such as the trace amounts of moisture present on most surfaces. This reaction is exothermic, meaning it releases heat. The speed of curing can be influenced by factors like humidity, temperature, and the presence of activators or primers.

Snellijmen are widely used for repairing a variety of materials, including plastics, rubber, ceramics, and some metals. They are particularly effective for small, precise bonding applications where speed and strength are crucial. However, they are generally not suitable for porous materials or surfaces that will be subjected to high heat or significant impact. Direct skin contact should be avoided as snellijmen can bond skin almost instantly. In case of accidental skin bonding, warm soapy water or acetone can be used to help loosen the bond. When stored properly in a cool, dry place, snellijmen have a shelf life of around one year.
